The European Union has pledged to withstand protectionist “bullies” as Donald Trump prepares to impose trade tariffs on numerous metal items.

At a press conference on Monday morning, the EU’s trade commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom suggested contact with the United States was likely to be kept during the week, but insisted the possibility of tariffs was inappropriate.
“Recently we have seen how (trade) is utilized as a weapon to threaten and daunt us. We are not afraid, we will stand up to the bullies,” she said.
On Thursday night, the United States President confirmed he was performing his risk to impose 25% tariffs on imported steel items and 10% on aluminium.
